New Hanover County Jail Roster Overview
The official current-inmate tool is the New Hanover County Sheriff P2C Inmate Inquiry. It covers active inmates in the New Hanover County Detention Facility, the local jail operated by the sheriff's office at 3950 Juvenile Center Road in Castle Hayne. The search is free and does not require a login. The public grid shows current active-inmate records, not every past booking, court filing, or final sentence. For that reason, the roster is the first step for local custody, not the only step.
The P2C home page states that users can search active inmate information, view active warrants, and search community events. The captured inmate grid showed name, primary charge, arrest date, and booking agency. The public data behind the grid also included fields such as Book ID, first name, middle name, last name, date of birth, race, sex, age, charge description, agency code, and a row-detail link. Full row detail was not fully harvested through the ASP.NET postback in the research, so bond, housing, and court-date claims are not overstated here.
The Sheriff-to-Citizen home page is the county's official launch point for active inmate, active warrant, and event searches.
Use the New Hanover County Inmate Roster
A good New Hanover County inmate records search starts broad, then narrows. Last name is the best first field because spelling, middle names, hyphens, and aliases can affect matches. Add a first name after the last-name list is too large. Use the advanced filter when the basic search returns too many records or when a person may appear under a partial name, demographic field, charge text, arrest date, or booking agency.
- Open the sheriff's P2C Inmate Inquiry and enter the last name first.
- Add first name only when the last-name results need narrowing.
- Select Search and review the active-inmate grid by name, charge, arrest date, and agency.
- Use Filter Inmate List for race, sex, age, primary charge, arrest date, or booking agency fields.
- Change the row count from 10 to 20, 50, or All if a likely match could be on another grid page.
- Call the jail at 910-798-4200 when a recent arrest does not appear or when release, bond, or hold status needs confirmation.
No-result searches should be handled with care. A person may still be in booking, released, moved to court, transferred to a state prison, held federally, in ICE custody, listed under another spelling, or outside New Hanover County. The roster is current county jail data, not a statewide person finder.
New Hanover County Roster Search Fields
The search-field inventory is one of the strongest local details in the research. The basic page uses first name and last name boxes. The advanced jqGrid filter adds hidden or result-column fields. The page shows 10 rows by default, with row-count choices of 5, 10, 20, 50, and All. P2C displays "No inmates matching the current criteria" if the filter returns no active jail match.

What New Hanover County Inmate Records Show
New Hanover County inmate records in P2C should be read as jail-side data. They help identify a person in active custody and show the charge description available to the sheriff's system. The court may later show a different charge, an amended charge, a dismissal, an indictment, or a disposition. A booking charge is the start of a custody record; it is not proof of conviction.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Book ID / book_id | Numeric booking identifier in the public JSON. |
| Name / disp_name | Last, first, middle, plus race, sex, and age shorthand. |
| Race | Roster demographic field and filter value. |
| Sex | Female or Male in the captured data. |
| Age / DOB | Age appears publicly; DOB appeared in JSON but not necessarily the visible grid. |
| Primary Charge | Main charge text displayed in the result list. |
| Arrest Date | Date tied to the arrest or booking event. |
| Booking Agency | Agency credited with the booking, observed as New Hanover So. |
| Mugshot | Not visible in the captured grid; Daily Bulletin arrest rows can display official images. |
| Bond, Housing, Court Date | Not visible in captured grid fields; use jail, eCourts, or Clerk channels. |
When New Hanover County Inmate Search Fails
A missing P2C result should trigger a fallback chain, not a conclusion. The detention page confirms that booking/intake is staffed 24 hours a day, but it does not publish a roster refresh interval. Recent arrests can take time to process. A person may also be released before a family member searches, held under another spelling, moved to court, transferred, or housed outside the local jail system. The sheriff's office and detention phone line are the practical next step for current local custody questions.
- Jail phone: call the Sheriff's Office / Detention line at 910-798-4200.
- In person: confirm counter access before going to 3950 Juvenile Center Road, Castle Hayne.
- Records request: use NextRequest for county-created records not excluded from that portal.
- Court records: use eCourts, the Judicial Branch, or the New Hanover County Clerk for filed charges and dates.
- Victim notification: use NC SAVAN/VINELink for custody-status alerts.
County, State, Federal, and ICE Inmates
New Hanover County inmate records live in different systems based on custody. The county roster covers pretrial and short local custody at the Detention Facility. The NC Department of Adult Correction offender-search landing page says the state offender database includes prison offenders, probationers, parolees, and historical offender information back to 1972, but it does not include county jail information. That means a current jail inmate may be invisible to DAC, while a sentenced state prisoner may no longer appear on P2C.
| Custody | Where to Look | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pretrial or local jail custody | P2C Inmate Inquiry and jail phone | Current New Hanover County Detention Facility inmates. |
| Sentenced state prison custody | NC DAC offender search | State prisoners, probationers, parolees, and historical DAC records. |
| Custody notifications | NC SAVAN / VINELink | Notifications for county jail, state prison, probation, parole, and registered sex offender records. |
| Federal sentenced custody | BOP Inmate Locator | Federal prison custody and prior federal releases. |
| Immigration detention | ICE Online Detainee Locator | ICE custody by A-number/country or biographical search. |
New Hanover County Jail Facilities
The local jail and the state prison are both relevant to New Hanover County inmate records, but they serve different populations. The detention facility is where recent local arrests and local jail commitments are searched. New Hanover Correctional Center is a DAC prison for sentenced adult male offenders in minimum custody and reentry status. Its residents are searched through DAC, not through P2C.

Booking Process in New Hanover County
A local arrest can be made by the sheriff's office, Wilmington police, a beach-town police department, a state officer, or another law-enforcement agency. The person is transported to the New Hanover County Detention Facility, where detention staff receive the person and paperwork. The sheriff's page says booking/intake is staffed 24 hours a day and processes inmates pending confinement. Classification is also identified as a local detention function.
Booking commonly includes identity entry, property handling, charge data, screening, and placement into booking status while confinement or release is decided. North Carolina local confinement law also requires medical-care planning for prisoner health and welfare. After booking, court records and jail records split. P2C shows current custody-side information; the NC eCourts Portal or Clerk shows formal case numbers, court dates, filed charges, and dispositions.
Custody flow: Arrest or warrant service > transport > booking/intake > classification > roster entry > first appearance or release decision.
New Hanover County Jail Visitation Rules
The sheriff's detention page says visitation is by appointment only and must be scheduled by the inmate. General published hours are between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. daily. The general statement allows each inmate two 45-minute visits per week with up to two adult guests, and all visitors must provide approved photo identification. The page also contains a separate in-person visitation restart section with more restrictive unit and minor rules, so the current rule should be confirmed before travel.

Mail and Money for New Hanover County Inmates
The mail rules are unusually specific. Beginning December 1, 2025, non-legal and non-medical inmate mail is routed to a Longview, Texas scanning address under NCIC standards. Mail must include the inmate name, inmate ID number, New Hanover County Detention Facility, P.O. Box 591, Longview, TX 75606, and a return address. Paper must be 8.5 x 11 inches, no more than five pages, front side only, with one photo maximum per mailing.
Money access is separate from bond. The sheriff links McDaniel Supply Company / JailPackStore for sending money. Money orders mailed to an inmate must be payable to New Hanover County with the inmate's name in the memo. Cash deposits can be made at the automated kiosk in the facility lobby. New Hanover County Sheriff App Notes
The research documents a New Hanover County Sheriff NC mobile app on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app-store text describes reporting crimes, submitting tips, interactive features, and public-safety news. No app-store text reviewed in the research confirmed an app-only inmate roster, warrant search, or records portal. The official inmate search channel remains P2C.
Wilmington Police also has a tip app and tip411 text option, but it is not the county jail roster. Municipal police departments may make arrests in New Hanover County. Adult jail custody still routes through the sheriff's detention facility unless the person moves to state, federal, or immigration custody.
